What Is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?
Uterine Fibroid Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure performed by an interventional radiologist. It works by blocking the blood supply to fibroids, causing them to shrink and symptoms to subside.
UFE treats all types and sizes of fibroids—including submucosal, intramural, subserosal, and pedunculated—and is ideal for women who:
-
Want to avoid surgery or preserve their uterus
-
Experience heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
-
Have pelvic pressure or bloating
-
Suffer from frequent urination or constipation caused by fibroid pressure
-
Are not candidates for or prefer to avoid hormone therapy
Why Choose IVIRA in Pittsburgh?
At IVIRA, we are committed to delivering state-of-the-art, compassionate care to women across Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Our board-certified, fellowship-trained interventional radiologists offer highly effective UFE treatment in a comfortable outpatient environment.
Benefits of UFE at IVIRA:
-
Uterus-sparing and non-hormonal
-
No incisions or general anesthesia
-
Same-day discharge for most patients
-
Shorter recovery time than traditional surgery
-
High success rate for symptom relief (85–90%)
-
Covered by most insurance plans
What to Expect During the Procedure
UFE is performed through a tiny incision in the groin or wrist. A catheter is guided into the uterine arteries using real-time imaging, and small embolic particles are injected to block blood flow to the fibroids. This causes the fibroids to shrink gradually over time.
The procedure usually takes 60–90 minutes and is performed under conscious sedation. Most patients go home the same day.
Recovery & Results
Recovery time for UFE is typically 7–10 days—much shorter than recovery from a hysterectomy. Cramping and mild discomfort are common and managed with medications. Over the following months, fibroids shrink and symptoms continue to improve.
Most women experience:
-
Lighter periods
-
Reduced pelvic pain and pressure
-
Improved bladder and bowel function
-
Enhanced quality of life
