What Is a Mediport?

A Mediport, also known as an implantable venous access port or port-a-cath, is a small device placed under the skin that connects to a vein, typically in the upper chest. It allows easy, repeated access to the bloodstream without repeated needle sticks.

Common uses include:

  • Chemotherapy

  • IV antibiotics or antivirals

  • Parenteral nutrition (TPN)

  • Blood transfusions

  • Routine blood draws for lab work

What to Expect During the Procedure

Mediport placement is typically completed in under an hour. After numbing the area with local anesthesia, a small incision is made in the chest, and a catheter is guided into a large vein (usually the jugular or subclavian vein). The port is secured under the skin and connected to the catheter.

You’ll receive aftercare instructions, and your port can usually be accessed for treatment within 24–48 hours.

Caring for Your Mediport

Our team will educate you on how to care for your port and coordinate with your infusion center or oncology team. Ports require regular flushing and maintenance, which can be done during clinic visits to prevent clotting and infection.
