What Is a High Frequency Spinal Cord Stimulator?
A High Frequency Spinal Cord Stimulator is a small, implantable device that sends mild electrical pulses to the spinal cord, interrupting pain signals before they reach the brain. Unlike traditional spinal cord stimulators, HF-SCS delivers relief without the tingling sensation (paresthesia) and provides better outcomes for many patients with chronic pain.

-
Ailed back surgery syndrome (FBSS)
-
Chronic lower back or leg pain
-
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
-
Peripheral neuropathy
-
Post-laminectomy syndrome
-

The Two-Step Process
The entire process is guided by imaging and typically performed under mild sedation with local anesthesia.
1. Trial Stimulation
A temporary stimulator is placed under the skin and connected to an external generator. You’ll “test drive” the device for 5–7 days to see how well it manages your pain in real life.
2. Permanent Implantation
If the trial is successful, we schedule a permanent implant. The tiny stimulator is implanted under the skin, usually in the lower back, with leads placed near the spinal cord.
Recovery & Results
Most patients return to light activities within a few days. The device is programmed to meet your unique pain pattern, and adjustments can be made easily over time. Many patients in Pittsburgh report a 50–80% reduction in chronic pain, improved activity levels, and a significant decrease in medication use.
